Airway Heights Parks & Recreation is Turning 10!
In January 2008, the Airway Heights City Council combined recreation services and parks maintenance to form the official Parks & Recreation Department. At that time, the City had 2 parks and a handful of programs overseen by 1 full-time staff and 3 part-time staff. Fast forward 10 years, the City now has 5 parks totaling 26 acres, 4 full-time staff, 8 part-time staff and over 25 programs offered each season with more to come. As our city grows so does our department and passion to serve. The success of our department is made possible by the support of our residents and community partners. In 10 years we have been able to offer some amazing programs focused on leading healthy and active lifestyles, enhancing community engagement, and creating a sense of place. Through continued community support we have been able to build traditions, such as the annual holiday tree lighting, and racing watermelons in the summer. These activities bring our community together, creating memorable experiences that will be treasured by residents for a lifetime. It is truly an honor to serve this great community and work each day to provide opportunities to residents of all ages. In August of 2016 residents overwhelmed us with their support, passing the bond for the Recreation Center. This Center will become the hub of our community, a place for people to come and enjoy the company of others, while improving their health. With the building set to open December of 2018, we cannot this of a better way to cap off 10 years as a department by opening the door, and beginning the next journey inside such an amazing facility.
As we look into the future for decades to come, there is one thing that will be vital to the continued success of the Parks & Recreation Department: the support of our residents. Thank you all for a great 10 years and here is to many, many more to come.
