Fire Department Management The Fire Chief manages the department. The Fire Chief is directly responsible for all activities covered under the broad categories of administration, fiscal, emergency operations, training, and fire prevention. The Fire Chief reports directly to the City Manager. The next level of management in the department is the Division Chiefs. The Assistant Fire Chief is the Chief Officer of the Training and Public Education Division. - This position oversees all aspects of emergency management and the administration of training programs and public education.
- The Assistant Fire Chief shall act as Fire Chief in the absence of the Fire Chief.
The Deputy Chief of Operations is the Chief Officer of the Operations Division. - This position oversees the daily administration of the suppression and EMS staff.
The Fire Marshal is the Deputy Chief of the Prevention Division. - This position oversees all aspects of the inspection program, supervises the Inspectors, and assures compliance with the Uniform Fire Code.
Under the Deputy Chief of Operations are the Battalion Chiefs, the Captains and Lieutenants. The Captains and Lieutenants primarily help manage facilities, equipment maintenance, personnel, and emergency operations. Operations The Airway Heights Fire Department has approximately 60+ members that are primarily volunteers. We operate with a 10 person crew on all night shifts including a Duty Response Chief and a Incident Safety Officer. We are not only recruiting for Firefighters, but Paramedics also. We currently have several Volunteer Paramedics on staff. It is the goal of the department to have all members become Wa. State certified Emergency Medical Technicians. Mission Statement The Airway Heights Fire Department has developed a mission statement to help focus the organization’s direction leading into the 21st century. The role of our members is to provide citizens with safe, cost effective, and efficient fire protection and public service. Members understand our commitment to safety; safety to ourselves with proper equipment and policies and safety to the public with education, prevention and service. About the occupation Firefighting is a physically demanding and inherently risky occupation. A Firefighter that has been accepted will attend an in-house fire recruit school that is approximately eight Sundays. After passing a practical and oral test, the firefighter will be assigned to the Operations Division.
