14th Ave. Landscaping Project Starts
The City has begun work on the much anticipated and delayed 14th Ave. project! Work began in March 2008 and is projected to be completed by May. The initial work will begin from Lundstrom to King streets with work on the section from King to Lawson streets to be follow. This effort has been painstaking at times but as the saying goes nothing good ever comes easy. On behalf of all the parties involved in this process the city extends its thanks.
14th Ave. Landscaping Plan Delayed
The City sent out requests for bids in late Summer 2007 to implement the landscape plan developed by the Revitalization committee. Unfortunately bids came back higher than anticipated and the city rejected all bids. The City will rebid the project in Spring 2008 due to the timeframe of getting any landscaping done before the Winter season.
14th Ave. Landscaping Plan (Phase I) Approved by City Council
The City of Airway Heights' City Council unanimously approved the 14th Ave. Landscaping Plan from a recommendation by the Revitalization Committee. According to the planning schedule the project will go out for bids in early June, with bids received within a few weeks after that. Implementation will commence in late July or early August. Landscaping Plan (Phase I) Finalized
The Revitalization committee has formally finalized the Phase I Landscaping Plan for the Highway 2 Corridor. Members have had numerous discussions on this plan and the moment has arrived for implementation. The plan will be taken to the Airway Heights City Council this month for approval, with hopes to begin the installation by July.

Phase I of "Conceptual" Plan--Install Landscaping north of 14th Ave.
Committee members in attendance viewed a presentation by WSDOT on the benefits of traffic roundabouts and its comparison to signalized intersections. SPW Landscape Architects showed a 3D visualization of the corridor with proposed options for the landscaping along SR-2 and 14th Ave. Members discussed the options and came up with suggestions and voiced their desires on what the landscaping should look like. SPW will present a landscaping plan per instructions by committee at the next meeting.
Master "Conceptual" City Center Plan
ALSC Architects presented a draft "conceptual" city center plan for committee review. The purpose of the plan was to give an overall vision of what the city center and corridor could look like. Discussion is ongoing as to the specifics of the plan however as an overall concept the plan is close to what the City's Comprehensive Plan had envisioned. Notwithstanding, the committee agreed that the area north of 14th Ave from Lundstrom to Lawson Sts. will be developed with landscaping with a plan forthcoming at the next meeting.
Near Final Corridor Landscape Plan
Mr. Jeff Warner of ALSC Architects submitted a revised design for the Yokes and 14th Ave. landscaping plan along the H2 corridor. This design showed a meandering 14th Ave. continuing as a two-way street from King to Lawson St. The road is narrowed from the current 40 ft. width to 24 ft. width. The committee proposed enlarging this concept to encompass the area from Lundstrom to Campbell St. Once this design is submitted at the next meeting it was agreed that this plan will be implemented in phases. Corridor Landscape Design
At the January 30 committee meeting Mr. Jeff Warner of ALSC Architects presented a draft design of the committee's recommendations from a our January 9 meeting. As proposed, this project will be the initial plan at revitalizing the corridor. Discussion ranged from whether it was feasible to close 14th Ave in front of Yokes Supermarket or allow it to remain as a through street.
Options Proposed -- ALSC Architects presented two initial options before the committee with hopes of finalizing a plan for implementation. The City's comprehensive plan identifies the area around Yokes Supermarket as a potential city center. Option 2 shows what could be a city center environment with pedestrian zones, whereas Option 1 does not allow a pedestrian area.
Corridor Block Design
The north side of the H2 corridor presented some of the most difficult problems for the city when it came to dealing with the exsiting traffic patterns and accesses. The committee came up with some preliminary design concepts that might help plan existing and future business locations along the north side corridor. Although these concepts are doable, albeit complex, the committee suggested that further study into these concepts be delayed until the initial 14th Ave. landscape plan is developed.
