Jobs Plan 2011

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Airway Heights City Council announced the Special Economic Development Plan, a vision for stimulating the local economy, putting our residents back to work and encouraging economic development. The plan will consist of a series of special and strategic initiatives throughout 2011 including business development, transportation improvements and expanding infrastructure, to support future growth. Utilizing new and existing policies, programs, engagement strategies and investments, creating quality jobs, protecting the environment and ensuring that taxpayers get true value from the City of Airway Heights public investments are priorities for City Council.

Council understands the plight of the local and regional residents who are currently unemployed, making the creation of new jobs within the city a top priority. Quality job opportunities and partnering with businesses big and small will help meet the needs of the future growth of Airway Heights and surrounding regions.

Throughout the next year, the city will call together industry, government and community leaders to identify steps to support sustainable and smart growth in the key sectors that anchor the city. The projects that are underway and upcoming in 2011 include:

Ø Spokane Raceway Utilities – We will target over $1.2 million to strengthen the Spokane Raceway Park. We will invest in a public utility initiative that includes public water, sewer and reclaim water utilities to the facility.

Ø Sprague Realignment – We are dedicated to partnering with the Kalispel Tribe of Indians to make a strategic transportation improvement that builds future options for Tribal development on holdings within the City.

Ø Septic Tank Elimination Project (STEP) – We are investing nearly $1.2 million to improve water quality. We will provide sewer infrastructure to remove over 100 homes from septic tanks and to connect to public sewer.

Ø Quality Utility Infrastructure – We are investing $4.4 million to expand utilities for future growth. To improve the quality of City utilities we will construct additional water storage and source.

Ø Lawson Street Reconstruction – The City will target over $1 million in grants to repair and reconstruct Lawson Street from SR 2 to 21st Avenue. This reconstruction will help improve traffic flow through the south side of Airway Heights.
